Fear of Shirk

Praise be to Allah

Its another Tauheed reminder. Upon receiving this, you might think the scholars have already explained everything about tauheed and you’ve got it covered. “oh, I don’t do this”, or “this does not apply to me”, “teach it to kids…” and feel over confident or safe from shirk.

This is from the traps of shaitan.

No one, no matter how knowledgeable or pious should feel secure from shirk.

Prophet Ibrahim supplicated to Allah:

“keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols”
[Qur’an 13:35]

Prophet Ibrahim supplicated to Allah to protect him and his family from shirk, for he knew the danger of that and he knew how easily people can be seduced by it.

It is no surprise that despite the strong faith of prophet Ibrahim, he knew he was not totally secure from shirk, so he supplicated to Allah for protection.

If a prophet was afraid of shirk, then what about you and I? The obligation upon us to fear Shirk is that much greater.

How can you feel safe from shirk when the prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Shirk is more inconspicuous than the creeping of a black ant on a black rock in the pitch-darkness of the night” [Ahmad 4:403]

If your enemy was that difficult to see, how could you defend yourself? Well, the prophet (peace be upon him) said shirk is more hidden than that.

The prophet (peace be upon him) said to his companions:

“Of the things which I fear for my Ummah, the thing which I fear most is minor Shirk”
[Bulgh Al-Maram]

He (peace be upon him) knew the dangers of minor Shirk, how it can strongly manifest itself in the community, polluting the pure monotheism of the Muslims, especially since it can afflict us without even knowing it. This is why the Prophet warned his companions to beware of it.

And If he (peace be upon him) said such about minor shirk, then what about major shirk?

Major shirk has a greater right to be feared.

The only way out is to keep praying to Allah to save us from falling into shirk, then seeking knowledge on tauheed.

Just as shirk is one of the most concealed of the evils, it is also the most destructive.

Allah does not forgive the one who dies upon Shirk.

Its time to take Tauheed even more seriously. Never let your guard down.

May Allah protect us from shirk.
